Tias
The municipal of Tias is arguably the most wealthy of all the provinces in Lanzarote. Home to the famous golden sandy beaches of Puerto Del Carmen, the hub of the bucket and spade brigade. The municipal of Tias is responsible for 70% of touristic revenues on the island. Despite it’s touristic focus there are a handful of towns, leisure activities not to be missed, and guided in the right way you can experience this municipality without being subjected to too much trashy cultural tastelessness.
Tias, (meaning aunties), named by the Governor of Gran Canaria after the love for his two aunts dates back to 1493. The town itself is situated back from the tourist and golden beachside town of Puerto Del Carmen up in the hillside.
Tias
Tias is a more residential area, and so tourist attractions in the town itself are few and far between, but if you need a small, inside attraction then the children’s ball park, Pim Pam Pun, on a cloudy or rainy day is reasonably priced, clean and friendly environment to while away some time.
The advantages of Tias are the residential prices and choice for food and fresh produce that you simply don’t get in the small tourist convenience supermarket stores, so it’s worth a visit to stock up on some good fresh produce herbs etc available on a daily basis. (check out the Farmers market in Mancha Blanca on sunday’s for the cheapest freshest produce).
Food Shopping Tias
Specifically Ropers, Chacon and the fruiteria in the high street down from the Hiperdino supermarket. The Hiperdino supermarket located in the centre of town is not massive but well located and you can pick up everything you need under one rough and houses a coffee shop and small ball park to keep little ones entertained.
Restaurants and Tapas
Tias is home to a few Tapas and reasonably priced local restaurants where you can eat affordably and authentically. Bodega Correos, Av Central 48 Tías, (Tel 0034 928 524 505), and La Ermita, Av Tias 63, (Tel 0034 928 524 076), are a couple of names. There is also Lilium gastro pub which is a perfect place for a cosy spot of dining in the cooler months of January and February where the intimate and warm decor is more appropriate.
Golf
The newly built golf course’s 18 holes are now open. Price for tourists is €55 for 18 holes, €30 euros for 9 holes, and Club hire is €2. The cost for the buggie is €15 euros for 9 holes, €20 for 18 holes. The clubhouse is still in construction, but the full 18 holes are now complete. Out and About in the Tias Region
Macher, Conil and La Asomada are three other smaller villages behind Tias all pretty similar in size and home to Spanish and international residents alike. Conil has a great Sociedad (great local social places). They are serving authentic food in a local environment and often have a bouncy castle up on the weekends for children. You can’t miss it right next to the church. Likewise there is a great small tapas restaurant you could more closely describe as a hole in the wall! More like dining in somone’s front room, but great and quick tapas. Look to the left of the Supermarket and you will stumble upon it.
A great restaurant for arguably some of the finest quality cuisine on the island would have to be La Cabana situated next door to the Macher Petrol station. Chef Darren Spurr whose culinary conquests include Sugar Reef Picadilly, London. Creating imaginative food blended from the finest ingredients with a fusion of international flavours, in an intimate environment. Partner and wife Debbie provides the ultimate table side attention.
Macher is also home to some other great quality restaurants with fabulous panoramic sea views, such as Deja Vu, Calle Meson 67, (Tel 0034 626 315 211). La Tegala open Tuesday to Saturday from 14:00 to 16:30 and 20:00 to 23:30. Mondays evenings only, closed on Sundays. Carretera de Tias a Yazia 60, Macher. (Tel 0034 928 524 524).
